Acampo Roughout (Pewter)
Price range: $12.99 through $25.99
This 4–5 oz Acampo in Pewter is a chrome tanned roughout cowhide leather made by SB Foot Tannery, known for producing high-quality leathers with excellent consistency and durability.
Acampo is made using a specialized soft retan process that gives it a noticeably softer, more flexible feel than many traditional roughout leathers. After tanning, a light oil treatment is added to improve toughness and long-term durability. The result is a leather that blends a buttery, comfortable hand feel with the resilience needed for everyday use.
It has a slight pull-up and feels conditioned without being oily on the surface. With a medium temper and some structure, this leather is a great choice for bags, accessories, and projects where you want durability and character without a heavily distressed look. It will show light marks over time but resists deep scratching.

What Does “Roughout” Mean?
Roughout leather is still full-grain leather — the hide hasn’t been split or weakened. The difference is simply which side faces out.
Instead of the smooth grain side being on the outside, the flesh side of the hide is used as the exterior surface. In many traditional roughout leathers this surface looks fuzzy, but in this leather it has been specially treated and conditioned, giving it a smooth, durable feel rather than a soft suede texture.
Because it’s full thickness leather, roughout is known for being extremely tough and long-wearing.
And yes — you can absolutely use the opposite (grain) side outward if your project calls for a smoother look.
Why Makers Like Roughout
• Very durable – The textured surface helps resist scuffs and wear
• Low maintenance – Doesn’t need polishing; brushing is usually enough
• Hides marks well – Everyday scratches blend into the surface
• Great for working gear – Often used in boots, saddlery, and rugged bags
Roughout vs. Suede (Important!)
Roughout is not suede.
Suede is made from a split layer of the hide, which is thinner and softer. Roughout uses the entire full-grain hide, making it significantly stronger and more durable.
Piece Sizes
1 sq ft will be approximately 12 × 12″
2 sq ft will be approximately 12 × 24″
These pieces are cut from larger hides and carefully selected to provide clean, usable sections for small projects. We trim around unusable areas so you receive a high-quality, project-ready piece without the waste of a full hide, which means shapes and edges may vary slightly. Exact size, shape, and colour will vary from piece to piece and hide to hide (and may also appear different depending on your screen settings). We’ve included multiple photos under different lighting to give you the best sense of colour. As with all natural leather, hides may contain brands, scars, and bug or fly bites.
